Information guides

The Library welcomes people who want to visit the Library's reading rooms and exhibitions, as well as those who are interested in using the collection and services.

The State Library of Victoria is one of Melbourne's most important landmarks. An magnificent example of 19th-century civic architecture, it boasts some of the city's most beautiful heritage interiors.

If you are planning a visit to the Library, useful information about parking, public transport, opening hours and floor plans can be found in the Visiting the Library section. Large bags are not permitted in the main part of the Library and will need to be left in the Cloakroom adjacent to the Front Foyer.

Exhibitions at the Library are a drawcard for our many visitors. Throughout the year the Keith Murdoch Gallery features a changing program of exhibitions, while the Cowen Gallery has a permanent display of 150 items from the Library's collection.

For a different experience, visit Experimedia where you have the opportunity to interact with the latest technology and digital information in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Or you may be interested in attending one of our literary events or learning programs which are listed on the What's On page.

The La Trobe Reading Room, with its majestic domed ceiling, is the focal point of many people's visits to the Library, although the Redmond Barry Reading Room also attracts great admiration for its airy, light-filled space and Victorian architectural features.

And for those who would like to know more about the people and events which led to the founding of the Library, there is plenty of interesting information in the History of the State Library section.

We recommend you join one of our heritage and exhibition tours, but if you would prefer to be more autonomous you may like to experience our virtual tour, then print off the pages along with the floor plan, and bring them with you when you visit the building.
